Roel Hofman was born on May 14th, 1956 in Rotterdam, theNetherlands. At a very young age he was fascinated by drawing and painting. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to the Rotterdam painter Cornelis Witters. Following this, he became teacher of drawing and painting at the Academy in Spijkenisse.In the 1990s Roel opened a gallery and started a business lending art.From this time forward, ART has been his life. To gain inspiration, hestays several times a year in France. While resting and relaxing,surrounded by beautiful nature, new paintings and ideas came about.Although he began with drawing, his love of painting came quickly. In thebeginning, he painted mostly in the traditional style. Thereafter he changed his style to what can be described as magical realism orsurrealism. Over time, he developed his own style, which is now clearly recognisable.For him, the most important element of his paintings is colour. It is the colour in his paintings that most viewers react to instinctively. "L'émotionen couleur" ("emotion in colour”) is his focus at the moment. The women in his paintings are a symbol for emotion, feeling, strength and vulnerability. Roel wants to touch people unconsciously with colours, pleasant associations and through the viewing of his paintings bring some pleasure to the lives of people.
